Simple explanations and practical uses for business, meetings/events, and personal occasions.

What are 1D and 2D barcodes?

1D (linear) barcodes encode data as a sequence of vertical bars and spaces along a single line. They’re ideal for short identifiers like SKUs or product IDs (e.g., UPC, EAN, Code 128) and are read quickly by laser or imaging scanners.

2D (matrix) barcodes store data in both directions—rows and columns. Formats like QR Code, Data Matrix, and PDF417 hold far more data, include error correction, and can be scanned with smartphone cameras.

2D barcode (QR-style): a grid of modules with error correction.

How you can use them

Tip: 1D is fast and simple for short IDs; 2D is flexible when you need more information or smartphone scanning.
